In Marketing, Enthusiasm Connects
Summary
Two incidents this week highlighted an often-overlooked element of persuasion.
Article Body
Recently, two incidents made me reconsider an essential component of persuasive marketing. It's an aspect we rarely discuss but is crucial for making genuine connections.
The first incident involved an experienced copywriter who sought feedback on a letter he planned to send to the Chamber of Commerce. Technically, the letter was spot on, with all the right elements of a sales pitch. However, it felt cold and impersonal. The tone was distant, making it clear the focus was on making a sale rather than building new relationships.
In the second incident, a participant in my copywriting training showed me an email she sent to an entrepreneur looking for a ghostwriter for spiritual stories. Despite lacking ghostwriting experience, her letter was compelling. She focused on her passion for storytelling and shared experiences that aligned with the project. Her sincerity and enthusiasm shone through, and the entrepreneur responded, saying her letter “spoke to her heart.” They quickly arranged a meeting, illustrating how powerful genuine connection can be in persuasion.
Reflecting on these experiences, I remembered another example from a few years ago. A personal coach had a website bursting with uniqueness and life, setting him apart in a crowded field. But when I recently revisited the site, it had changed. The warmth and authenticity had been replaced by a polished, impersonal facade. It became clear he was trying too hard to fit a formula, losing touch with his authentic self.
This elusive ingredient?"presence and animation with a sincere desire to connect?"can make all the difference. Whether playful or earnest, genuine writing has no pretense. Its impact is similar to charisma, creating connections through words without face-to-face interaction.
While I can’t scientifically prove that this heartfelt communication sells more than lifeless wording, I know it attracts ideal clients. It allows newcomers to shine brighter than seasoned professionals by connecting confidently and sincerely.
To imbue your writing with this essence, aim for genuine connection and smooth out rough edges before sharing. Sometimes it’s easy to capture this spirit, but other times it takes multiple attempts.
When this Element X is present, it’s palpable. Customers craving authenticity sense it too, engaging with interest and responding eagerly.
