Our company is in the process of updating its bookkeeping software. This change is anticipated to boost efficiency over time, but for now, it's a challenging shift for me, the office manager.
Over the years, we've experimented with various programs, eventually settling on QuickBooks. Although I didn't have strong feelings about it initially, I've become accustomed to it. The decision to switch programs feels misguided to me.
The existing system had no significant issues, but setting up a new one has brought unforeseen challenges. All previous records must be transferred to the new software, a task assigned to a computer expert?"who happens to be the boss's son.
The process involved creating a macro to convert files from the old system to the new one, but the project did not succeed. Furthermore, there’s a compatibility issue between QuickBooks and the new program, designed by Linux enthusiasts. Although it's stable and well-coded, the interface is not user-friendly.
I bore the main burden, needing to learn this text-based interface to input old data. While the new program is faster and more stable, mastering it is tedious and time-consuming compared to simply clicking icons in more intuitive systems.
Even though I've now adjusted, I still prefer software with a clickable interface rather than relying on keyboard shortcuts. This new program feels uninviting, especially since I use it all day; a more pleasant interface would be appreciated.
Unfortunately, as long as the program is free, fast, and uses less storage space, other considerations seem to be overlooked.
