Microsoft’s New Small Business Solution: Tailored Software for Your Needs
Software Designed Around Your Needs
Microsoft’s New Small Business Solution
Summary:
Microsoft has launched a new service specifically designed for small businesses with 10 or fewer employees. If you're considering bringing your business online, Office Live is a simple and effective solution. This software offers three different versions tailored to the unique requirements of small businesses:
Option One: Basic
As Microsoft's core offering, the Basic solution includes several free services:
- A domain name
- Web hosting
- Email with your company’s domain
For instance, if you’re opening a hair salon called Anne’s Coifs, you can log into [OfficeLive.com](http://OfficeLive.com) to check domain availability. If it’s available, Microsoft registers it as [www.annescoifs.com](http://www.annescoifs.com). You’ll receive a free business email and a customizable website with a variety of templates.
The website setup is user-friendly. Despite using templates, your site can be unique. Terra Terwilliger, Microsoft’s worldwide business management director, states, "You get a tremendous amount of flexibility in those templates... You can have over 50,000 combinations just using the dropdown menus." Furthermore, you can upload your own logo, text, and images.
Option Two: Essentials
This advanced version includes all Basic features plus:
- Business management tools for handling customer lists, assets, and projects.
- Ability to design your website beyond templates or hire a professional designer.
- Creation of password-protected shared sites. Share documents securely with customers, partners, or employees, allowing them access to project statuses, files, and tasks, with varying levels of editing permissions.
Option Three: Collaboration
The Collaboration option offers all business applications without web features. Terwilliger explains, "If you already have your own website but want the business tools and shared site functionalities, you can opt for this."
Making It Work for You
Office Live is currently in beta, with about 75,000 users enrolled in the free trial. The Basic version will remain free. Upgraded versions will incur a monthly fee upon final launch but are more affordable than server costs. During the testing phase, all services, including subscriptions, are available for free.
Microsoft anticipates releasing the final version in late 2006, likely November. Users are encouraged to explore and provide feedback to enhance Office Live’s user-friendliness for small businesses.
