Good Ways to Procrastinate and When It Can Be Beneficial
Navigating the Art of Procrastination
Surprisingly, I'm working on a weekend amidst the noise of jackhammers, trying to make peace with the lack of quiet time I had planned for. As I indulge in some procrastination myself, I thought it fitting to explore how procrastination can sometimes be advantageous.
With a busy travel schedule on the horizon, I'm writing this article to stay productive on the road. Procrastination, in this instance, isn't a terrible choice. It inspired me to consider when procrastination might actually be beneficial.
The Rules of Good Procrastination
1. Let Time Resolve It: Sometimes, leaving a task alone allows it to resolve itself. If it’s not truly urgent, it shouldn’t be a priority on your list.
2. Give Ideas Time to Stew: If letting a task simmer can lead to a better solution, allow it some space. Organize your thoughts and jot down ideas to aid incubation.
3. Tackle Other Tasks: If you must procrastinate, choose a lower-priority task. Similar to offering a choice between a red or blue hat, it encourages action on necessary duties.
4. Take a Break: Sometimes, stepping away can enhance productivity. When in the right mindset, creativity and energy flourish.
5. Handle Smaller Parts First: Break down daunting tasks. Hate doing taxes? Start by organizing documents or scheduling a meeting with your accountant.
6. Procrastinate with Purpose: This might sound counterintuitive, but occasionally focusing on enjoyable tasks can relieve stress and spark productivity.
7. Delegate When Possible: If someone else can handle a task, consider letting them. While leaving the dishes for your partner might not be wise, hiring help is another story.
Most importantly, avoid guilt. It only diminishes the potential benefit of procrastination.
However, frequently working on lower-priority tasks isn't ideal. Alan Lakein, a time management expert, advises asking, "What is the best use of my time right now?" So with that in mind, back to work!
