The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots Program in Okinawa is set to work tirelessly this holiday season, broadening the reach of its 60-year-old charity initiative.
Beginning November 3, Reserve Marines, activated specifically for Toys for Tots, kicked off their 2007 toy collection drive with ceremonies at Camp Foster and Kadena Air Base. This year, the program has expanded to include Thailand and Guam, as stated by Staff Sgt. Suzette Smith, a coordinator with Okinawa’s Toys for Tots. Previously, the program focused on collecting toys for children in Okinawa Prefecture and the Philippines.
Smith expressed her hope that Marines will personally deliver donations to Thailand and Guam, similar to Operation Goodwill, which brings toys and clothes to children in the Philippines during the holidays.
According to the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation's website, the core aim is to deliver a message of hope through a shiny, new toy at Christmas, inspiring needy youngsters to grow into responsible, productive citizens and community leaders.
Last year, approximately 10,500 toys were collected, according to Sgt. Shamala Henson, a coordinator for Okinawa’s Toys for Tots. This year, the goal is to gather at least 11,000 toys, especially to cover the additional countries involved.
“We want to surpass last year’s targets and ensure every child receives four toys, just like last year,” said Henson.
Program coordinators are also highlighting the Ho Ho Express?"an event to maximize donations during the drive's final hours on December 15. A bus will visit each collection point on the island to gather remaining toys. This event previously doubled the toy collection in 2005, aided by the American Forces Network radio broadcasters who provided frequent updates on the bus’s location and stops.
Toys are needed for children of all ages, with a particular shortage for pre-teens and teenagers. “People should remember the 13-year-olds, as that’s often the most underserved age group,” noted Smith.
Okinawa’s program coordinators have organized numerous events this year and require ample volunteer support. Volunteers can assist in toy sorting or encourage donations by appearing in public in their dress blues.
Maj. Bill Hendricks and a group of reserve Marines in Los Angeles launched the first Toys for Tots program 60 years ago by distributing 5,000 toys to needy children. The mission continues as long as there are children in need worldwide.
