The Proof of the Pudding... Is in the E-mail

Summary

An entrepreneur is someone willing to invest £5 to make £20, knowing they'll at least get their £5 back in the worst case.

Article

This week, I received a couple of intriguing emails.

The first one caught my attention with its brevity, promising to "make you one million pounds in just two months." Typically, I receive plenty of these claims, and I prefer more details before deciding whether to respond. However, its shortness intrigued me enough to reply. I wondered if this conciseness was intentional or just a result of laziness. Either way, it worked?"I responded.

The follow-up email was equally surprising. It repeated, "I can make you one million pounds in 2 months, we have to meet." By now, I was quite skeptical, and I still haven’t received a response to my question, "Have you made this money yourself?"

This brings me to an important point: proof.

I often encounter fantastic ideas, but if I can’t make them work or achieve the promised results in the expected timeframe, I can’t recommend them to others. Proof is a vital marketing tool that must be present to ensure success.

For instance, I'm currently collaborating with someone who has a phenomenal health product. I suggested that their website headline should be immediately followed by a testimonial, like, "I was struggling with X, until I found Y." It's incredibly effective yet simple.

I'm also working with someone setting up their own online private detective business. Again, we're emphasizing proof right on the website’s entry point.

Then there was a second email questioning if self-employment was possible for them. The message was a series of questions that seemed like excuses, including, "I don’t believe I have the entrepreneurial skills required to do this. What do I need?"

I pondered this carefully, wanting to avoid a textbook response. I addressed all initial questions with examples from those I’ve worked with, or from my personal experience.

I wrote: An entrepreneur is someone willing to invest £5 to make £20, knowing they’ll at least get the £5 back.

I explained that without proper research, entering a market is like gambling blindly. However, with thorough knowledge and testing, your small investment is much more likely to be profitable. Similar to a professional gambler who studies diligently before betting, preparation is key.

So, my tips for online business this week: focus on proof and preparation.

Take care and have a great week,

Chris Cobb
