Graceful Chaos
Summary
Life requires us to adapt and navigate its unpredictable chaos gracefully. Sometimes, everything goes smoothly until an unexpected challenge forces us to change course. Our response to such chaos determines our success.
Stranded in the Chaos
Recently, I found myself stuck on a curb in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam?"still affectionately called Saigon by locals. Across the street awaited a restaurant where my husband and I had planned to eat. I could see the food and smell its enticing aroma, making my hunger all the more keen.
Crossing the street may sound simple, but at noon in Saigon, it was akin to crossing a bustling river. The street was teeming with motor scooters, bicycles, motorcycles, cyclos (pedaled rickshaws), cars, trucks, and buses. The fewer wheels a vehicle had, it seemed the more passengers it carried; I even saw a family of five on a Honda scooter without helmets.
The center lines only added to the chaos, serving merely as suggestions rather than strict dividers between opposing lanes. Traffic weaved, turned, and crossed lanes with reckless abandon, merging seamlessly from side streets. At times, vehicles bore down on me from every imaginable direction.
Traffic lights offered little help. Drivers largely ignored red lights, and those waiting at green lights gradually surged forward, eventually countering the rogue traffic. This tumultuous dance repeated endlessly.
Dancing through the Chaos
Faced with this whirlwind, the flashing green “walk” sign goaded me from across the street. As I contemplated retreating to find food on my side, a kind, elderly Vietnamese gentleman approached.
"Crossing is not a problem, but a dance," he advised in English, guiding me into the frenzy.
As we walked slowly, the drivers seamlessly adjusted, gliding past us without honking horns or screeching brakes. It felt like moving through a school of fish, the chaos parting smoothly around us. In no time, I reached the other side.
Grateful to my guide, I enjoyed my lunch. Later, I taught the crossing technique to my husband and friends, even leading a group of eight across a hectic boulevard like a choreographed ensemble.
Reflecting on the experience, I realized Saigon's traffic mirrors the rhythm of business. It’s a graceful chaos, with everyone pursuing different goals, navigating obstacles while facing constant change. While collisions occur, the system functions, and people reach their destinations by embracing the flow rather than fighting it.
