Don’t Stop Short of the Gold
Introduction
How often have you started pursuing a goal with the best intentions, only to quit before reaching it? Do you ever wonder what might have happened if you had just pushed a little further? Imagine being only three steps away from success and giving up. If you could turn back time, what would you do differently to take those final steps?
The Power of Persistence
In Napoleon Hill's classic, "Think and Grow Rich," he recounts the story of R. U. Darby and his uncle during the gold rush. They hit a rich gold vein in Colorado and, excitedly, began digging, but soon lost track of the ore. After fruitless attempts, they quit and sold their equipment.
The man who purchased their machinery, however, approached the problem differently. He consulted a mining engineer, who used his expertise to find the vein just three feet from where Darby’s efforts ended. Millions of dollars in gold were extracted as a result.
The lesson? Success often lies just beyond what appears to be your greatest challenge. Embrace failures as learning opportunities. What adjustments do you need in your approach, mindset, or environment?
Modern-Day Persistence
Consider my experience with a personal trainer. Initially, she set what seemed like impossibly high goals. As a small build, I expected minimal results. When she told me to lift 50 pounds doing calf raises, I struggled. After four reps, I wanted to stop, but she pushed me to do two more.
At first, leg pressing 100 pounds felt like torture. But she slyly increased the weights without my knowledge. After two weeks, I was unknowingly lifting 80 pounds on calf raises. By the fourth week, I doubled my capacity, lifting 100 pounds on calf raises and 200 on leg presses. Her vision pushed me beyond self-imposed limits.
Applying the Lesson
This lesson of overcoming self-limitation extended to my business mindset. The barriers we set are often mental. Defeat is just a result. Measure it, adjust your strategy, and persist. The only true limits are the ones you create in your mind.
