The decline in farms and farmers is a key factor, influencing fewer children and teens to consider farming as a profession. With a plethora of exciting, higher-paying careers available, it's understandable why farming might not be on their radar.However, I once met a young boy whose dream was to become a farmer. When I asked why, he answered simply: he loves being outdoors and wants to help people get food. I found his response refreshingly profound. He didn't know any farmers personally but was inspired by a book he read at school. For him, farming was the ideal way to ensure people didn’t go hungry.
As a career counselor, I’m keenly interested in why people choose certain paths. This boy was motivated by a love for nature and a desire to contribute positively to society. If more people considered these factors when choosing careers, our world would be a better place. Too few understand their passions and how these can benefit others. Not many have the clarity of this young boy who simply wanted to farm.
Before deciding on a career, think seriously about your goals and talents. Your chosen profession should be something you love and that benefits others.
Next time you ponder your career path, consider my young farmer friend. His desire to work outside and provide food for people is both simple and inspiring. Let his story motivate you to pursue something equally meaningful and passionate.
