Older Teachers: Opportunities and Challenges in ELT
Summary
I recently met a retired engineer who was halfway through her TEFL training course. She asked about her job prospects after completing the course. Unfortunately, age prejudice is prevalent in the field of English Language Teaching (ELT). Various factors contribute to the profession being dominated by younger teachers.
Firstly, teaching English abroad appeals to those who wish to explore the world and gain experience, which typically aligns with younger individuals. Secondly, the pay in this field often doesn’t compare favorably to other professions, but younger people may accept this in exchange for travel opportunities. Schools also tend to value the enthusiasm and energy that younger teachers bring, along with their flexibility and adaptability.
Despite these challenges, many retirees find fulfilling second careers in ELT. Mature teachers offer a wealth of life experience, bringing additional depth to classroom discussions and the invaluable quality of wisdom. In many cultures, older individuals are respected, and students may feel more confident with a mature teacher.
Older teachers can also provide a calming influence on younger colleagues, who may find the new career path overwhelming. Those with backgrounds in other professional areas can offer unique benefits, such as teaching English for Specific Purposes (ESP). For instance, the engineer I met could be a great asset for schools with students aiming for technical university courses.
Ultimately, a teacher's age shouldn’t be the focus. The most important question is whether the teacher can effectively do the job. If they can, that’s what truly matters.
