Ladies and Gentlemen, Jumpstart Your Careers: Automotive Technicians Needed
Unlock a Rewarding Career as an Automotive Technician
Landing a coveted spot on a race car pit crew is highly competitive, yet opportunities abound in the automotive industry. Car dealerships nationwide are eagerly seeking qualified automotive technicians to join their teams. These roles offer attractive salaries ranging from $30,000 to $70,000 or more, based on the technician’s training and market demand.
A Growing Demand for Skilled Technicians
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the auto industry will require 35,000 new technicians annually through 2010. Despite the demand, these careers remain underappreciated.
Shattering Stereotypes: High-Tech and Rewarding Work
An intriguing initiative, the No. 29 Goodwrench Expertise Challenge, aims to elevate awareness and support training for aspiring technicians. "The outdated perception of auto technicians as a ‘dirty, dead-end job’ couldn’t be further from today’s reality," says Peter Lord, Executive Director of GM Service Operations. "Modern vehicles are highly advanced, with technology far surpassing that of the Apollo moon missions."
Vehicle service and repair quality have a direct impact on customer satisfaction with both their vehicles and dealerships, making the need for skilled technicians crucial.
Encouraging Future Technicians
The Challenge supports technician training by offering a $200,000 scholarship fund if Kevin Harvick’s No. 29 car wins two of 12 selected NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series races. This fund encourages Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES) high school students to pursue further education through the GM Automotive Service Educational Program (ASEP).
Established in 1995 by former GM Chairman Jack Smith, AYES creates career opportunities in automotive technology for promising students.
Inspiring New Generations
"There are countless NASCAR fans and others primed for careers as automotive technicians," says Larry Cummings, CEO of AYES. "The Expertise Challenge is an entertaining and effective way to highlight these exciting career paths."
Students in GM ASEP’s two-year programs earn while they learn, splitting their time between classes and internships at GM dealerships. The program operates at 66 schools across 38 U.S. states, 15 in Canada, and one in China. Graduates earn an associate's degree and are prepared for the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification test. Over 14,000 graduates have completed the program, with more than 2,000 students currently enrolled.
Rewards for Success
If Harvick’s team meets the Expertise Challenge by winning two selected races, GM Goodwrench will award 29 Grand Prizes, including a 2007 Chevy Avalanche, a $1,000 GM vehicle maintenance certificate, and an assortment of Reese’s products.
Generous Contributions Regardless of Outcome
Should only one race be won, two winners will receive the Grand Prizes and $25,000 will be donated to the GM Goodwrench Scholarship Fund. Even if no races are won, an all-new 2007 Chevy Avalanche and other prizes will still be awarded to a lucky participant, with a $25,000 contribution to the scholarship fund.
This initiative not only highlights the career opportunities in automotive technology but also supports the future of aspiring technicians nationwide.
