Creating Your Own Luck
Summary
Losing my job during the recession at the close of the last century taught me the profound impact of creating your own luck. Within a week, I sought an interim role while hunting for a more permanent position. I accepted a low-wage job in an unfamiliar industry and decided to fully engage by learning all I could and contributing in every possible way.Article
After losing my job in the recession, I quickly realized the importance of taking charge of my own fortune. A week later, I sought a temporary job to tide me over while searching for something more permanent. Embracing a minimum-wage role in an unfamiliar field, I immersed myself in learning and contributing. I studied manuals in my spare time, streamlined processes, trained new staff, volunteered for additional tasks, and assisted with whatever was needed. Remarkably, four weeks into a ten-week stint, I was offered my first management position.Had I heeded my friends' warnings that accepting a low-paying job was career suicide, worried about taking a role beneath my qualifications, or simply met the minimum expectations, I would have missed the opportunity that led to five promotions over the next seven years.
In my experience, climbing the corporate ladder to Vice President of a multi-billion-dollar company, I've learned that opportunity often appears in unexpected places for those who stand out. Those who excel at what's expected?"and then go beyond?"tend to find opportunities others miss. Setting aside ego and fully contributing to your tasks can indeed create your own luck, as initiative is a valuable asset in the workplace.
Employees who insist on extra pay or responsibility before going beyond are approaching it wrong in my opinion. My advice is to excel at your work and continuously improve. Increased pay, responsibilities, and opportunities often follow individuals who are genuine contributors. Whenever I was in a position to hire, offer permanent roles to temps or interns, establish new departments, or promote people, I looked for those excelling in their roles?"and then going above and beyond.
