I enjoy consulting. My friends frequently ask for advice on mending rocky relationships, often stemming from poor decisions, or when contemplating a career change. Here's how I approach it: I sit up straight, squint a bit, and genuinely listen to their stories. Capturing the essence of their issues is crucial for effective consulting. Once they're done sharing, my work begins.
What I truly appreciate about my consulting is its lack of stringent requirements. My clients just need to be desperate enough to seek my advice. Often, I discuss topics in which I have no experience or proven success, making my consulting practice strictly informal. It’s unlikely I'll make a living off this advice.
I don’t wish to undermine anyone’s profession since I consider myself a kind person, and I don’t want to invite retaliation without defense. I’m sure internet advertising consultants are fantastic professionals who add value to their firms and the economy.
However, I do find it amusing when articles claim that becoming an internet advertising consultant requires overcoming just two hurdles: professional advertising experience and internet knowledge.
While it might seem trivial, this notion irritates me for a couple of reasons. Firstly, as a fledgling quasi-consultant, I’m offended by how it trivializes the skills needed for successful consulting. More importantly, I dislike how it preys on the hopes of those seeking a fulfilling career.
That’s why my consulting business thrives. My clients (mainly struggling friends) know my only gain is the enjoyment of hearing about their challenges and offering outrageous advice in hopes they'll follow it. It might seem childish, but at least I’m not profiting at the expense of others’ self-esteem.
