Article Body
"It's just the same tissue, darling. It doesn't matter how it looks,” my frustrated husband whispered as I enthusiastically piled up cartons of “designer” tissue. Yes, you heard me right?"designer tissue! As a graphic designer and writer familiar with the effort behind product packaging and branding, I couldn’t help falling for it. All the allure, the dazzling colors, the catchy copy. But hey, I’m a consumer too. I have the right to appreciate beautiful packaging!
And, oh, how pretty they are.
There’s the “nature lover” design, the “fruity” pattern, the “woman on the go” style, and the adorable “kids” packaging. I grabbed four of each like a woman on a mission, rushing to the checkout with my screaming children and bewildered husband in tow. It was a cinematic moment, reminiscent of action heroes escaping in slow motion with blasts and chaos behind them.
Except my pursuit involved tissue boxes adorned with fancy designs. Were it not for my appreciation of these designs, I’d find it amusing. Instead, I was serious?"so much so that after using the tissues, I cut out the packaging designs and saved them in my “must keep for reference” folder. Only select designs make it in there, and these were definitely worth it.
This is the result when genuine effort goes into packaging design. People often think, “It's just packaging. What matters is what's inside. They’ll just throw it away. Why spend so much on it?” Perhaps it feels like those funds should enhance product quality or expedite shipping, or maybe even entertain potential clients at fancy restaurants. It’s really up to you.
But here’s what I want to share, both as a graphic designer and a consumer: Well-designed packaging captures attention. And when consumers stop to admire your packaging, they’re more likely to check out what's inside. Isn’t it logical to say that this increases the chances of them buying your product?
Packaging’s role is to captivate the consumer’s attention. Without compelling design, they’ll walk right past the sea of competitor products?"and yours?"without a second glance. Your product sits on the shelf, and its primary selling tool is its packaging. Capture their interest, and you’ve won the first round.
Think about it!
