The Basic Ballet Steps
Ballet, a timeless art form, has captivated audiences for centuries, enchanting both royalty and commoners alike. While the basic steps may seem simple, they require years of dedication from dancers to perfect.
For many, especially young girls, the dream of becoming a graceful ballerina begins with these foundational movements. Mastery of basic ballet steps is essential before advancing to more complex techniques.
Modern ballet gained popularity in France under King Louis XIV, and its terminology remains predominantly French. Here’s a look at the fundamental positions and steps:
Basic Ballet Positions
First Position - Premiere
Stand with heels together and toes pointed outward in a V shape. Keep knees together, arms softly curved in front, and maintain a straight spine with the back, pelvis, and head aligned.
Second Position - Second
Position feet shoulder-width apart, turning legs out. Keep your arms rounded and extended to the sides.
Third Position - Troisième
Cross one foot, placing its heel against the middle of the other foot, while maintaining outward turned legs. If the right foot is crossed, raise your right arm in a semi-circle above your head and extend the left arm to the side. Reverse the arm positions when the left foot is on top.
Fourth Position - Quatrième
Position one foot about 12 inches in front of the other, keeping legs turned out. Raise one arm over the head in a semi-circle, adjusting according to which foot is in front.
Fifth Position - Cinquième
Turn legs out at the hips, placing the heel of one foot against the big toe of the other. Form arms into a circle above the head.
Basic Ballet Steps
Arabesque
Balance on one leg while extending the other straight behind you.
Chassé
Perform a galloping motion where one leg appears to chase the other.
Emboîté
Move forward by jumping on alternate toes.
Jeté

These positions and steps form the foundation of ballet, practiced by beginners and professionals until they become second nature. By mastering these movements, dancers build the skills necessary for more advanced techniques and performances.
