Smoosh Concert Experience
Summary:
On Friday morning, I reached a breaking point on my way to my biology lecture and decided to visit the Student Health Center. There, I discovered I had a sinus infection and bronchitis, leaving with five prescriptions in hand.
With medicine in my system and feeling upbeat, I jumped into my trusty Jeep and headed to St. Louis to escape the chaos of Parents Weekend at Cramer Hall.
Concert Night:
Leaving around 5 PM, we reached St. Louis by 7 PM, grabbed a bite at Bread Co. (known as Panera elsewhere), and made our way to The Pageant to catch performances by Smoosh, Final Fantasy, and Bloc Party.
Despite thinking the tickets indicated an 8 PM door time, we arrived to find Smoosh halfway through their set. Remarkable for their age?"12 and 14?"from Seattle, these girls played synth, drums, and xylophone with impressive skill. Their ability to open for big names like Pearl Jam and Bloc Party, while being so young, is incredible and a bit enviable. Asya, the keyboardist, even rocked out so hard that she bled on her keyboard, much to the surprise of Final Fantasy.
Smoosh wrapped up their set like true professionals by 8:30 PM, making way for Final Fantasy, a.k.a. Owen Pallett. You might know him as the violinist for Arcade Fire.
Owen is incredibly talented and, notably, quite charming. Alas, he's also openly gay, much to my disappointment. Positioned at stage right, I couldn't snag a picture, but imagine a charismatic guy with a violin, performing while an artist crafted stunning visual stories on an overhead projector at the center stage.
He delivered eight songs with the artist, each representing one of Final Fantasy's eight Schools of Magic, along with a few solo performances.
