Sewing and Knitting for a Cause
Looking for a winter project to engage in with my neighbor, I wanted something enjoyable that also benefited the community. With our shared love for sewing and knitting, we decided to use these skills for a meaningful cause. We contacted a local care home for the elderly and offered our assistance.
The care home informed us that many residents suffer from poor circulation and feel cold during winter, especially those in wheelchairs. They suggested we knit blankets to keep them warm. After discussing the necessary dimensions to prevent the blankets from getting caught in wheelchair wheels and choosing suitable yarn and patterns, we were ready to start.
Knitting the blankets was a perfect project?"simple, quick, and easy to transport. We worked on them together at each other's homes. For my first blanket, I opted for a patchwork design using leftover scraps from previous projects. I assembled the patches in a random pattern and backed it with a single fabric for a finished look, adding a thick padding layer for extra warmth. To complete it, I stitched a basic embroidery-quilting pattern on top. These blankets were the perfect size to fit snugly on a lap and were easy to handle.
After finishing my quilts, I called my neighbor to check on her progress. She needed more supplies but a severe snowstorm hit, making it impossible to get to the store. Under localized travel advisories, my neighbor came over to help with the trimmings on my quilts. We spent the day cozily in front of the fire my husband built, enjoying the warmth and comfort as we finished the quilts. Meanwhile, our husbands played cribbage and we all shared some brandy reserved for special occasions. It turned out to be a wonderfully relaxing day.
Once I complete the hand sewing, I'll bind the quilts with a single color before sending them to the nursing home. Hopefully, they'll bring warmth and comfort to someone this winter.
