Overview
Knots in wood, often viewed as imperfections, can reduce the strength of structural timber. However, these unique features can also be used for artistic purposes. In a longitudinally-sawn board, a knot usually appears as a darker, roughly circular spot where the surrounding wood's grain pattern changes direction.
Understanding Knots
A knot forms when a side branch or dormant bud becomes part of the tree trunk or a larger branch. Its irregular, conical shape creates a roughly circular cross-section in the wood. This results in a local grain pattern that can differ from the surrounding wood by up to 90 degrees.
As a tree grows, lower branches often die but may remain attached for years. New growth layers cover these dead branches, creating unjoined knots that can loosen or fall out when the wood is cut into boards.
Classification and Effects
In structural timber, knots are categorized based on their shape, cut, solidity, and how firmly they're held in place. This firmness is influenced by how long the branch was dead while the tree continued to grow around it. The rigidity and elasticity of timber depend more on the quality of its fibers than on the presence of knots. While knots can lower the breakage strength of beams, their impact is minimal during compression parallel to the grain.
For aesthetic purposes, such as wall paneling, knots add visual interest and texture, enhancing the wood's appearance. In traditional Basque music, the unique sound qualities of knots are valued when playing the txalaparta, a type of xylophone.
