Fact Is Funnier Than Comedy
When I'm in need of a chuckle, I usually turn to a sitcom or the comics section. If I'm craving even more humor, I'll settle in for a full comedy movie. But when only the absolute funniest will do, I simply look around at the real world.
The sheer fact that these situations are real only adds to their hilarity. We often expect a basic level of common sense from people, but "common" is misleading. In reality, what we consider common sense is quite rare.
Doubtful? Just glance at the odd news section of any website or newspaper. At first, I thought these stories were fictional, but after meeting some of the people involved, I became a believer.
Consider the pet owner who claims her cat dialed 911, saving her life in the process. Or the person who called 911 to report that they couldn't find the "Eleven" button to dial "Nine-Eleven." How about the bank robber who wore a helmet with his name clearly displayed? These stories sound fictitious, yet they’re entirely real.
Ernest Hemingway used to speak about sitting on steps to watch the world go by. I do the same, but I find it far more entertaining. Not only does the world pass me by, it often makes a fool of itself along the way.
So, if you think life is dull and dreary, just look around. Forget joke books. A newspaper can offer all the amusement you need. An anecdote about a duck walking into a bar is funny the first time. Responding to "Knock Knock" jokes remains amusing for the first few dozen times. But the real world provides an endless stream of laughter.
It's no surprise that filmmakers include bloopers at the end of movies. Many people find these outtakes even funnier than the film itself. The unpredictability of real life often surpasses scripted comedy.
