My fascination with record systems and valve amplifiers dates back to the pre-33rpm era. Our dad had an impressive collection of 78s and an electric record player?"quite luxurious at the time! Beside it sat a small box for needles, which he dutifully replaced every eighth record. Dad kept a pad next to the player, meticulously noting each use.
As LPs made their way into our home, the equipment evolved. Dad first purchased an HMV valve amplifier/radiogram but soon upgraded to separate stereo components.
In the late 1960s, he invested in a system including:
- Thorens TD150 record deck
- SME 3009 Series II Tonearm
- Shure V15 cartridge
- Leak 30 Plus amplifier
- Leak Sandwich 600 Speakers
I'm proud to still own the Leak 30 Plus Amplifier, complete with its original packaging and brochure?"a nostalgic glimpse into the past.
Like many dads, mine gifted me his older equipment when he upgraded. This allowed me to enjoy the fantastic sound of the Leak Sandwich 600 Speakers for years, though I no longer have them.
Some friends acquired Quad valve amplifiers, igniting my interest. About a decade ago, I was lucky to obtain an untouched set of Quad II valve amplifiers and a Quad 22 control unit. A tip: always opt for unmodified Quads, as alterations often ruin them.
Recently, I purchased Quad ESL-57 electrostatic speakers on eBay, unseen but thankfully as described. They're not operational yet since we're remodeling our home. Once finished, I'll have a dedicated listening room for my hi-fi setup. I'll keep you updated on progress!
My current system includes:
- Thorens TD125 MkII
- SME 3009 Series II tonearm
- Shure M75ED cartridge
- Quad II mono blocks
- Quad 22 control unit
- Quad ESL-57 speakers
Though I'm currently using Tannoy Mercury Speakers with the Quad II amplifiers, they're on quality stands, enhancing the sound.
The Quads will soon head to the Quad service department for a well-deserved restoration. I’ll keep you posted on this journey!
