Crafting Hand-Wrought Candlesticks
Overview
Every holiday season, I like to create small handmade gifts for my family and employees. This year, I decided to craft hand-wrought candlesticks designed with a classic touch, inspired by the elegance of Antan. My aim was to create candlesticks that could serve both as functional items and decorative pieces. Given the plan to produce about 20 units, the design needed to be simple yet effective. After developing two prototypes, I refined the process with precise tools to ensure efficiency.
Materials and Design
For this project, I used mahogany for its rich color and ease of work, though any quality wood would suffice. My prototypes were initially crafted in hard maple. The candlestick consists of three main components: a base, a stick, and a handle. The base is crafted from a 6-inch by 1-inch thick piece, the stick from a 2-inch by 4-inch piece, and the handle is shaped from a piece approximately 1 inch in diameter, with three sides rounded. The final design stands at 5 inches tall with a lower diameter of 5-3/8 inches. The base features a flared bottom and a contoured face, while the stick is detailed with cones, bird beaks, and pearls.
Construction Process
Once the base and stick are dimensioned and smoothed, locate the center on both sides of the base and both ends of the stick. The handle can be fitted later. Using a compass, draw a 5-3/8 inch circle on one side of the base?"this becomes the top. With an awl, mark the centers of the base and stick. A 3/8 inch dowel connects the base to the stick, secured with adhesive at the top.
Using a drill press, drill a central hole in the base to your desired depth. Then, saw along the marked circle, keeping the blade just outside the line. This ensures a clean, precise cut.
In summary, making these candlesticks involves careful measurement, precise cutting, and attention to detail, ensuring each piece is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
