Summary:
Since the release of their latest album, A Weekend In The City, in February, Essex indie-rock stars Bloc Party have experienced a year filled with remarkable achievements. They've been on a wide-ranging tour, gracing stages at major events like Live Aid, Glastonbury, Reading/Leeds, SXSW, and the Austin City Limits Music Festival.Even though they've only been together for five years and have released just two full albums, Bloc Party has made a significant impact in the music scene. With members Kele Okereke (vocals/guitar), Russell Lissack (guitar), Gordon Moakes (bass), and Matt Tong (drums), they’ve effectively used distribution and marketing tools to place their music in video games, commercials, remixes, and soundtracks, reaping the rewards of their efforts.
Their debut album, Silent Alarm (2005), received critical acclaim, being named Album of the Year by NME and achieving platinum status in the UK, reaching number 3 on the charts. In the US, they earned a 4-5 star rating from Rolling Stone and hit number 114 on the Billboard charts, ultimately surpassing a million sales worldwide.
Initially, Bloc Party was grouped with other British indie bands, but quickly distinguished themselves. Spin magazine praised lead singer Okereke's compelling songwriting, hinting at the band’s longevity, thanks to their emotional depth and political edge.
Following a remix of Silent Alarm and Japan-exclusive EPs, Bloc Party returned in 2007 with their sophomore album, defying the one-hit wonder label. A Weekend In The City climbed to number 2 on the UK charts, and sold 48,000 copies in its first week in the US, reaching number 12 on the Billboard charts, a strong improvement from their initial release.
This new album shows Bloc Party evolving, becoming more comfortable and distinct. Although leaks led them to preemptively share the album on MySpace, their sales remained strong.
