The other night, I watched Alfred Hitchcock's classic film I Confess. It features a young Montgomery Clift in the role of a priest, and also stars Anne Baxter. The movie begins with an immigrant who accidentally kills a wealthy resident during a robbery. He confesses the crime to Father Logan upon returning to the rectory where he works. The following day, with the murder uncovered, Father Logan must pretend he's unaware of what happened. As the police investigate, they start suspecting Father Logan. The gripping element of the story lies in seeing a man wrongfully accused, bound by his vow not to reveal the true culprit he knows. Even at the film's climax, when Father Logan is exonerated and attention turns to the immigrant, he maintains his silence.
