5 Songwriting Tips for the Lazy
If you’re a songwriter like me, you’ve probably noticed that sometimes writing songs feels more like a chore than a passion. You’d think that something you love wouldn’t ever get dull, right? Well, not exactly. Even our greatest passions can become tedious now and then. That’s when I take the lazy route?"and often, it leads to surprisingly good results!
Whether you're new to songwriting or have some experience under your belt, here are a few simple tricks to kickstart your writing process in no time.
1. Reflect on Daily Situations
Think about an event from your day?"whether it happened at work, during your commute, or at home. It could involve coworkers, family, or friends. Choose a situation that impacted you, positively or negatively.
For example: “At work, my boss is constantly on my case, but knowing someone in the office has a crush on me keeps me going.”
2. Brainstorm Related Words
List as many words as you can that relate to the situation.
Continuing the example: anger, frustration, happiness, excitement, nervousness, annoyance, elegance, attractiveness, humor, etc.
3. Create Short Sentences
Write brief sentences about the situation, incorporating the words from your list.
For instance:
- His constant chatter frustrates me.
- If he only knew the turmoil inside.
- Her eyes make me smile.
- I keep cool to avoid frustration.
- He doesn’t see what makes my day pass.
- I can’t stay in this misery much longer.
Don’t worry if you’re not using all the words you brainstormed. Let your creativity flow, and you’ll be surprised at the magic that unfolds.
4. Improvise a Melody
Listen to an unfamiliar backing track and improvise a melody as it plays. There’s no need to worry about lyrics?"just hum or sing “la la” to your heart's content. This exercise helps you subconsciously prepare to create melodies for your own chord sequences later.
5. Develop a Simple Chord Progression
Grab a guitar or keyboard and create a basic chord progression. Keep it simple?"two chords for the verse and two for the chorus. Compose a melody over this progression and record it.
If you don’t play an instrument, collaborate with someone who does. You’ve already got half of your song ready!
