In 1916, the Nizhegorodskoye Zemstvo established the first School for Wood-Working Arts and Crafts in Semyonov. The Volga region, near Nizhny Novgorod, became a thriving center for folk arts. Khokhloma painting on wooden tableware emerged as one of the most popular crafts in both Russia and abroad.
Khokhloma's "grass-leaves" motifs and vivid color schemes are rooted in ancient Russian decorative traditions. This art form uses aluminum powder and lacquer to create a shimmering gold color against a black lacquer background, a hallmark of Khokhloma art.
The Crafting Process
Artisans shape the tableware from dried lime wood, transforming it into bowls, vases, mugs, dishes, and spoons. Once shaped, the items are coated with red and brown primer, dried, and polished with powdered aluminum to create a silver-like sheen.
Following painting, the articles are varnished and heated in ovens at 120-130 degrees Celsius. This process turns the varnish golden, imbuing the designs with a warm, rich glow.
Khokhloma pieces, including dishes and cups, were traditionally used during holiday feasts. Modeled after luxurious golden plates, these items are practical and safe for serving both hot and cold foods.
