What Is Abstract Art? One Artist's Perspective
Understanding Abstract Art
Many people often wonder about abstract art without finding satisfying answers. This question is repeatedly asked, evidenced by the numerous articles on the subject. As an abstract artist, I’d like to share my perspective on what abstract art truly is.
Defining Abstract Art
Let's start with an official definition. According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary, "abstract" is described as "Idealistic, not practical; abstruse; (Art etc.) free from representational qualities." It’s this last point I want to delve into.
When we say art is free from representational qualities, it means the artwork doesn't depict recognizable images like figures, buildings, or landscapes. There’s no intentional reference to anything specific in the physical world.
Iconic Abstract Artists
Jackson Pollock, one of the first abstract artists, exemplifies this style. His process involved randomly dripping paint onto a flat surface. He even used paint-filled cans with holes to drip paint in an unpredictable manner, ensuring no tangible likeness to any physical object. This method embodies true abstract art.
Misconceptions About Abstract Art
The confusion arises when art appears loose or childlike, leading some to mistakenly label it as abstract. For example, take Jean Dubuffet’s work. Although he's known for abstract art, certain pieces display roughly painted figures and faces, which aren't purely abstract in my view. Some might call these works semi-abstract, but to me, a piece either represents something or it doesn’t.
Contemplating Mark Rothko
Consider the later works of Mark Rothko. While some might see simple rectangular shapes as representational, understanding his philosophy reveals he was exploring color fields, not painting rectangles. His massive canvases and abandonment of titles reinforce his commitment to pure abstraction.
My Own Abstract Work
I’d like to share one of my abstract pieces, which aims to convey deep or spiritual movement. Words like "portray," "spiritual," and "movement" come with associations, but not necessarily physical ones. My art seeks to connect with the spirit, representing the essence of pure abstraction. More insights are available on my blog.
The Essence of Abstract Art
Ultimately, abstract artists strive to express non-figurative concepts like emotion, thought, the greater self, anarchy, and randomness. I plan to explore these "non-figures" further in upcoming articles, starting with “How to Produce an Abstract Image ?" Part 2.” I invite you to join me in this exploration!
