Varnishing an Oil Painting
Varnishing your oil painting is essential not only for protection against UV light, pollution, and abrasion, but also to enhance its color vibrancy. Varnish, made from Damar resin dissolved in turpentine and other organic solvents, adds a sparkling finish to your artwork.
Understanding the Drying Process
Oil paint dries from the outside in, forming a surface skin as it dries. Small pores develop in this skin, and even if the surface feels dry, the underlying paint remains wet. Allow at least six months for the oil paint to dry thoroughly so it won’t be affected by mild solvents in the varnish. Applying varnish too soon can dissolve the paint, causing issues like wrinkling, cracking, and yellowing.
Preparing Your Painting
1. Clean the Surface: Ensure the painting is free of dust and dirt by wiping it gently with damp cotton wool.
2. Dry Thoroughly: Use another piece of cotton wool to dry the surface, removing any fibers caught in the paint.
3. Let it Rest: Allow your painting to dry completely for several hours.
Varnishing Technique
1. Select Your Finish: Choose between high gloss, satin, or matte finishes. A matte varnish can prevent your painting from being too shiny.
2. Application Method: Use a flat bristle brush or spray for application. If brushing, apply the varnish in even, parallel strokes from one edge to the other, working from top to bottom. Ensure consistent varnish application across the painting.
3. Coating Process: Varnish the entire painting in one session. Once the first coat is dry, apply a second coat at a right angle to the first for an even finish.
Drying Time and Testing
- Initial Setup: After applying varnish, leave the painting flat for at least 10 minutes to prevent runs.
- Final Drying: Prop the painting upright against a wall, facing inwards. Check the edges to ensure the varnish isn’t tacky. It should dry within one to two days, depending on the weather conditions.
