Nonetheless, I recognized that our high school was precisely the area where my students had unparalleled expertise. It seemed like the perfect opportunity for them to write their first play.To tackle this project, I divided the class into several teams. One group focused on writing the script, another handled casting and production, and a third managed set design, costumes, and logistics. I was both surprised and delighted by the students’ creativity during the brainstorming sessions. They had a strong understanding of parody and aimed to portray truths about our school in a comedic and thought-provoking manner.
Opening night arrived, and I sat in the front row, still a bit uncertain about what to expect. Over the next hour and a half, I experienced a mix of laughter, tears, and joy as my students delivered a stellar performance. They executed the well-crafted script with skill, resonating deeply with the audience and revealing some well-known yet often unspoken truths about our school. Their performance left a lasting impression, and I was incredibly proud to have been part of this project. It even made me wish I had recognized the potential of parody much sooner.
