Many people have different motivations for learning Spanish. Whether it's for a vacation, a business trip, or the desire to emigrate, speaking another language provides a tremendous sense of achievement.
My motivations were quite mixed. I had long been drawn to learning another language, and Spanish always captivated me. Perhaps it was Spain's allure?"sunny beaches, siestas, lively dinner parties, and the vibrant culture. While there's more to Spain than these clichés, it attracted me more than languages like French or German.
The pivotal moment came when I planned a long journey through Central and South America, visiting up to 19 Spanish-speaking countries. That was back in 2002. Since then, Spanish has become an integral part of my life. I speak, read, and understand it so well that it feels second nature.
When people ask if I'm fluent in Spanish, I hesitate. Even though I communicate with ease, there's always more to learn, and words and expressions differ from country to country.
One of my personal benchmarks is watching Spanish soap operas or movies with complete comprehension, just like I do in English. Although I'm not quite there yet, I'm close! I highly recommend "Pasión de Gavilanes," a popular Colombian telenovela. I’ll discuss this and more in future articles.
How did I evolve from knowing only "gracias" and "amigo" to reading Spanish books and conversing fluently? That's the focus of the upcoming articles. Learning a new language isn’t easy; it takes time, patience, and commitment. However, my main message is that anyone can achieve this with determination.
In the next article, we’ll delve into preparation. It’s crucial to set clear goals and plan how to reach them. Realize that mastering Spanish won’t happen overnight. With the right mindset, learning a new language can be exhilarating.
I don’t consider myself naturally gifted in languages. In school, French was my worst subject. When I started learning Spanish, I knew nothing about other languages and began from scratch. If I can do it, anyone can.
Stay tuned as we continue this exciting journey into the Spanish language!
