Every child delights in drawing or painting. The accuracy of their creation is irrelevant; what matters is the personal reality they express. During these moments, they are creators, reveling in their achievements. Their goal isn't to become an artist?"they are artists already.Sadly, as we mature, we often grow self-conscious about our abilities. Criticism may lead us to believe our talents lie elsewhere, causing us to suppress our creative expressions.
Embracing Childlike Creativity
Picasso famously said, "All of my life I have been learning to paint like a child." He succeeded by retaining his childlike imagery and innocence. Despite initial criticism, his works are now priceless.My personal journey with art began around age ten. By high school, I used my meager earnings on oil paints and canvas, focusing on nature, particularly animals. Talent can be both a natural gift and a developed skill, and although I lacked formal training, I relied on my natural ability.
Even now, as a senior, I continue painting without formal education. While I sometimes wish I had learned the technical aspects, my heart guides me. No school can teach you to paint from the heart. I continually challenge myself to transform my visions onto canvas. No certificate is required for that.
Seeing Like a Child
We often look without truly seeing. Our eyes are mere lenses?"they lack knowledge and experience. To truly see, we must open our minds. This is why I find beauty in imperfect subjects.A broken seashell possesses more character than a perfect one. Less-than-perfect models intrigue me with their unique features. For portraits, I focus on interesting facial structures, eye color, and character lines. This childlike perception compels me to capture these images on canvas.
Henri Matisse said it best: "Creation begins with vision. The artist must look at everything as though seeing it for the first time, like a child."
