Hugh Rosen: A Brief Introduction
After graduating from high school in 1948, I enlisted in the army for three years. I then pursued a degree in English Literature, eventually earning a master’s and a doctorate in clinical social work. For three decades, I was part of the faculty at a university in Philadelphia, where I was a tenured professor. After retiring, I completed a Master’s in Creative Writing.
I enjoy working out three times a week and have a passion for reading, writing, films, classical music, and my two cats, Bandit and The Kid. While I cherish time with family and friends, I also appreciate solitude.
Beginning the Writing Journey
I started writing in college, creating several one-act plays that were featured in the school’s literary journal; two were even performed on stage. During my academic career, I wrote non-fiction related to my field. My venture into creative writing began later, with short stories and my current novel.
Exploring Different Genres
I write both fiction and non-fiction. My non-fiction work is clinical and scholarly, while my fiction is mainstream drama.
About Silent Battlefields*
Silent Battlefields is my seventh book and first novel. It delves into the impact of the Holocaust and its aftermath on two families: one being Holocaust survivors with a young adult son, and the other a gentile family with a father who was once a Hitler Youth and a German soldier, also with a young adult son. As these families interact, unexpected revelations and relationships emerge.
Inspiration and Writing Process
A friend who is the son of Holocaust survivors inspired the story. He shared the profound impact this history had on his family, sparking the idea for my novel. The story evolved as I wrote, taking about four years to complete?"two and a half years of actual writing, interrupted by volunteer work teaching English to immigrants.
