How to Care for Your Tattoo: Free Advice
Summary:
When you first get your tattoo, leave the bandage on for at least four hours, or overnight if you get tattooed late. Wash your tattoo gently with warm water and soap once you remove the bandage.Tattoo Aftercare Guide:
Day One:
Keep the bandage on for at least four hours. If your tattoo session ended late, you can keep it on overnight. When you're ready, gently wash your tattoo using your hands with warm water and mild soap. Don’t use cloths or sponges. If the bandage sticks, use water to help remove it. Avoid rebandaging once removed.Ongoing Care:
Clean your tattoo twice a day during the healing period. Allow it to dry out for the first day, washing to keep it clean. Afterward, use a skin conditioning lotion or gently massage in A&D ointment. What to Avoid:
- Be cautious: Some people develop allergies to Bacitracin or other ingredients in triple antibiotic ointments. We don't recommend these or plain Vaseline.- Heavy application of petroleum-based products can suffocate the tattoo and might cause a rash.
- Avoid soaking your tattoo in baths or long showers.
- Avoid chlorine, salt, alcohol, and sun exposure for 10 days. Be careful with lotions containing alcohol.
Additional Tips:
- If you work in dirty conditions or wear tight clothing, cover your tattoo with a dry paper towel.- Wear loose clothing around your tattoo to let it breathe.
- It’s normal for small flakes of skin to peel off as it heals, but don’t force it. Avoid rubbing, scratching, or picking. If it itches, gently smack it instead.
Keep Clean:
Wash more frequently if you’re exposed to grease, chemicals, or dirt. Extra care is needed if your tattoo is near high-bacteria areas like the armpit, buttocks, or genitals.Sun Protection:
Once healed, apply strong sunscreen before exposing the tattoo to sun to prevent fading. Tattoos usually take 7-10 days to heal.Special Offer:
