The old adage says, "Never work with children or animals," but as a parent, that's hardly an option. Over the years, I've tried countless times to capture the perfect photo of my kids. With one child, patience and a digital camera usually led to success. However, with three children, I've come to realize that a perfect picture is elusive?"even with a professional photographer.
Recently, we hired a professional for our children's christening photos. We dressed to the nines and headed to the studio with our adorable brood, optimistic about the outcome.
As soon as we arrived, chaos ensued. Our eldest darted off with the photographer's child, with our middle one not far behind. Meanwhile, the baby urgently needed feeding. As a breastfeeding mother, I found myself awkwardly managing my impractical top amid the situation, discreetly covering up with a teacloth until he was satisfied.
Once we finally got everyone together, our eldest daughter decided to throw a tantrum worthy of a toddler?"despite being six years old. We spent what felt like an eternity calming her down, coaxing and encouraging her to act her age.
The session ran long, with photos snapped in haste. We left the studio promising ourselves?"and the photographer?"that we wouldn't endure such an ordeal again.
When we received the photos, we were amazed. The photographer had managed to capture some truly angelic moments. It was hard to believe these serene children in the photos were our own. Perhaps some photographic magic had replaced our sullen, angry kids with little beacons of happiness.
Despite the stunning images, we can't help but be transported back to the day's stress every time we look at them. For now, those beautiful photos remain tucked away, awaiting a day when we can laugh at the chaos and our naivety as parents.
