The New Tang Dynasty Television's Chinese New Year Spectacular presents an enchanting array of dance performances this year, showcasing new dance troupes and delving into 5,000 years of history. The event spans a variety of folk traditions from Mongolia, Tibet, and the Yunnan region of China.
Renowned choreographer Yung Yung Tsuai has been part of the Spectacular since its inception in 2004. Hundreds of dancers from across the United States and Canada dedicated almost daily rehearsals for over a year. Yung Yung Tsuai is one of six dance instructors, all graduates of China’s prestigious dance schools, contributing to over a century of collective training and experience. With such expert teachers, collaboration is key.
While the choreographers embrace traditional themes and styles, the performances often blend Eastern and Western elements, incorporating ballet techniques with the expressive movements of classical Chinese dance. Ms. Tsuai notes that ballet training helps dancers refine their skills for the intricate classical Chinese techniques.
For Ms. Tsuai, the Spectacular’s uniqueness lies not only in the dances and vibrant costumes but also in their impact on the audience. "For those few minutes on stage," she observes, "viewers are transported to a realm of chivalry, loyalty, and honesty?"a place of beauty and peace. We aim not just to display traditional Chinese culture but to awaken the desire for beauty and goodness within everyone."
This desire brings Ms. Tsuai back year after year, whether as a choreographer or teacher. It also fuels the commitment of hundreds of dancers who dedicate themselves to these annual performances.
"Art feeds the soul," Ms. Tsuai believes. "Experiencing art that promotes peace and harmony influences us positively. In the past, people lived as though in a divine realm. Though not always overtly religious, life was deeply spiritual. When art highlights beauty and the positive aspects of human nature, it can enhance how people interact in their daily lives."
Ms. Tsuai is confident that audiences will leave the New Tang Dynasty Television's Chinese New Year Spectacular feeling not just entertained but uplifted and renewed by this sumptuous cultural experience.
