A Classic Toy Born by Chance
Discovering a Timeless Toy
With the rise of internet shopping, classic toys that were once hard to find are gaining a new audience. These timeless treasures, which were immensely popular upon their release, continue to enchant children and bring smiles to their faces.
Let's journey back in time to explore the origins of one such beloved toy.
The Serendipitous Birth of the Slinky
In 1943, a Naval engineer named Richard James accidentally knocked some springs off a shelf while working on a project to measure battleship horsepower. To his surprise, he noticed that the springs didn't just fall?"they seemed to "walk" across the floor. This curious movement inspired him to create an iconic toy: the Slinky.
Over the next two years, James meticulously tested and refined the ideal steel gauge and coil for his invention. His wife, Betty, aptly named the toy "Slinky," derived from a Swedish word meaning "sleek" or "traespiral."
The couple borrowed $500, and Richard invented a machine that coiled 80 feet of wire into a two-inch spiral. Initially, sales were slow, but everything changed when the Slinky was showcased at Gimbels Department Store in Philadelphia during the 1945 Christmas season. Within just 90 minutes, 400 Slinkys were sold, igniting a nationwide craze.
Challenges and Triumphs
In 1960, Richard James underwent a personal crisis, leaving his family and the Slinky behind to join a Bolivian religious cult. Despite the turmoil, Betty James took over as CEO of James Industries, determined to revive the company.
Under her leadership, the Slinky brand expanded to include innovations like Slinky Pets, Crazy Eyes Slinky (glasses with spring-attached fake eyeballs), and neon Slinkys. She switched from the original Swedish black-blue steel to American steel and relocated the company to Hollidaysburg, Pennsylvania. Betty also launched a memorable advertising campaign, featuring the famous Slinky jingle:
*What walks down stairs, alone or in pairs,
And makes a slinkity sound?
A spring, a spring, a marvelous thing,
Everyone knows it’s Slinky!
It’s Slinky, it’s Slinky, for fun it’s a wonderful toy,
It’s Slinky, it’s Slinky, it’s fun for a girl or a boy!*
More Than a Toy
The Slinky is not just about fun?"it has educational value as well. Schools use it to demonstrate concepts in physics, such as wave properties, forces, and energy states. With 250 million sold to date, the Slinky continues to captivate generations. It is still manufactured in Hollidaysburg, using the original equipment designed by Richard James.
