Snoop Dogg: The Doggfather
Snoop Dogg, born Cordozar Calvin Broadus Jr., is an iconic American rapper, record producer, and actor. Known for his distinctive laid-back and rhythmically complex lyrical style, he is one of Dr. Dre's most prominent protégés. With over 17.6 million albums sold, his influence on music is undeniable.
Growing up in Long Beach, Snoop Dogg was initially involved with the Crips gang and frequently found himself in trouble. However, his passion for music led him to create homemade rap tapes alongside his cousin Nate Dogg and friend Warren G, who is Dr. Dre's stepbrother.
Snoop's big break came when he collaborated with Dr. Dre on the groundbreaking album, The Chronic. His contributions significantly boosted his visibility, paving the way for his debut album, Doggystyle, to debut at number one on U.S. music charts. Remarkably, it was the first debut album to achieve this feat.
His second album, Tha Doggfather, released in November 1996, faced challenges due to the decline in gangsta rap's popularity following the death of Tupac Shakur and the legal troubles of Suge Knight, co-founder of Death Row Records.
Despite this, Snoop Dogg continued to thrive, releasing several successful albums such as Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told, No Limit Top Dogg, The Last Meal, Paid tha Cost to Be da Bo$$, and R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece, all of which went platinum. His next album, The Blue Carpet Treatment, was set for release in 2006.
