"As a kid, I didn’t hate my name, but it felt strange introducing myself," says the Atlanta-based performer. Her name carries deep meanings: "the loved" in Indian and "awakening" in Hawaiian. "It took growing up to appreciate its significance."
Now embracing her identity, Prema LaNay is set to breathe new life into music with her debut album, The PREfix, under Interscope Records.
A Journey from Stories to Songs
Interscope co-founder Jimmy Iovine praises her as "a marvelous writer." Prema's journey began with crafting personal short stories that naturally evolved into melodies and songs. Her initial project, The Pre-Album, showcased what she calls "theatrical" R&B, capturing attention across industry circles. Its success spanned continents, reaching London, Japan, the Dominican Republic, and Canada, ultimately securing her a deal with Interscope in April 2007.
Described as a revitalizing force in a stagnant music industry, The PREfix highlights Prema’s talent for crafting vivid, Oscar-worthy narratives. Tracks like "He Beats Me" explore intense emotions, while "Loving a Junkie" and "He Got Blown Away" demonstrate her creative passion.
"I want my music to transport listeners to another world," Prema shares, emphasizing her love for storytelling. "I want it to feel like I’m giving them a fix. Some turn to drugs for that?"I want my music to be their alternative."
