How to Succeed in the Music Business: Part 1
Summary:
So, you want to be a star? Let’s dive into what it truly takes to succeed in the music industry.
---
You've taken the plunge and completed your album. It's remarkable, deserving to be heard worldwide. You’re confident in your talent, but you know the journey to stardom won't be easy. Everyone says the music industry is tough ?" and they're right. But with talent and determination, what could possibly stand in your way?
Many people outside the music industry have no idea how challenging it is to survive, let alone succeed, in this ever-changing, unforgiving world. Being a musician involves far more than just writing, recording, and performing.
Creating a polished-sounding demo CD requires significant time and effort. Don't be fooled by shows like Pop Idol or X Factor. These programs misrepresent the music industry and undermine its integrity. Although some contestants are genuinely talented, these shows prioritize entertainment over genuine artistry, often exploiting hopefuls for ratings.
Our society is obsessed with instant fame. Celebrity lifestyles are constantly in the spotlight, convincing many, especially the young, that fame is easily attainable. However, the reality is quite the opposite. For a deeper understanding, Simon Cowell's book I Don’t Mean to Be Rude offers valuable insights.
Being a musician is a calling and a way of life, where everything else takes a back seat. Musicians must be singularly focused, and as one myself, I can attest to this. It's about the journey ?" a continuous path of self-discovery, making music, forming bonds, and enduring both triumphs and setbacks. The pursuit of crafting the perfect song or album never truly ends. But even with success, the pressures and demands only increase.
You can’t approach music casually if you aim for more than just amateur fun. To truly succeed, you must accept that you probably won’t ?" and this isn't as discouraging as it sounds! The most crucial aspect of music is the love for it. It's a passion ingrained in your soul, taking precedence over everything else.
Now, you might think, "That’s easy for you to say ?" you're in the music business." True, I’ve enjoyed moderate success in a specific genre, but success is relative. My life is centered around music, but it comes with sacrifices, especially in personal life and finances.
Being in music is a long-term commitment. Most musicians will describe the journey as challenging. When young musicians say they've sacrificed everything, they often underestimate what "everything" truly means.
Musicians need several attributes: selfishness, stubbornness, dedication, passion, and belief. You must accept hard times and be willing to give your all. Even then, success can be elusive if you’re not in the right place at the right time. Yet, through it all, you must keep smiling, pushing forward because music defines you.
A supportive partner is essential for a musician. Without one, it’s nearly impossible to succeed. Remember the old joke: "What do you call a musician without a supportive partner? Homeless!"
Ultimately, what's the difference between a musician and someone who wants to be one? A musician is someone who lives and breathes music, stepping outside the conventional 9-5 to pursue their passion, defining their own success. In contrast, those who merely aspire often struggle to take these vital steps.
