Norman Cook's musical journey is marked by incredible diversity and success. Known globally as Fatboy Slim, he has produced and performed in a wide range of genres, including indie pop, hip hop, house, and big beat.
Born Quentin Cook in Bromley in 1983 and raised in Reigate, Surrey, he developed a passion for music early on, creating a punk fanzine as a teenager. While attending sixth form college, he met Paul Heaton. Cook later studied English, Sociology, and Politics at the University of Brighton, where he began DJing in the vibrant local club scene.
In 1985, Heaton invited Cook to join The Housemartins as their bassist. The band, based in Hull, soon gained fame with hits like "Happy Hour" and a number one single, "Caravan Of Love," in 1986. After the group disbanded in 1988, Cook returned to Brighton to dive back into the club scene.
Teaming up with Lindy Layton, he produced the dub house classic "Dub Be Good To Me," blending The Clash’s "The Guns Of Brixton" with inspired vocals. This track reached number one, and Beats International, the project behind it, released two albums before disbanding.
Cook then formed Freakpower with vocalist and brass-player Ashley Slater, achieving a hit when Levi's used their track in a commercial. Another hit, "Rush," followed, featuring a remix by Cook's alias, Pizzaman. Under this name, he produced club favorites like "Trippin On Sunshine," "Sex On The Streets," and "Happiness."
Freakpower continued to release albums, and in 1996, they hit the charts with "New Direction." During this time, Cook introduced his most famous alias, Fatboy Slim. He partnered with Damien Harris to establish Skint Records in Brighton, and Fatboy Slim’s "Santa Cruz" was their first release. Their mission was to create music with big beats and basslines appealing to both house and indie club audiences.
In 1996, Fatboy Slim released "Everybody Loves A 303," a tribute to the classic Roland synth. His debut album, Better Living Through Chemistry, followed, producing hits like "Going Out Of My Head" and "Punk To Funk," which helped establish the Big Beat genre.
Fatboy Slim’s much-anticipated second album, You've Come a Long Way, Baby, arrived in 1998. It achieved international success, went platinum in the U.S., and included major hits like "The Rockafeller Skank" and "Praise You." The latter's Spike Jonze-directed video earned three MTV Video Music Awards and two Grammy nominations.
In 2000, Halfway Between The Gutter And The Stars showcased more diversity with influences from R&B, hip hop, and hard house. The standout single "Star 69" featured bold vocals and an intense kick drum that thrilled audiences.
Continuing his success, Fatboy Slim released Palookaville in 2004, along with a compilation album. Today, he remains one of the world’s leading DJs and producers.
