A Study in Banjo Lessons
Summary
Reflecting on my early banjo lessons, I recall the time I thought I was making progress through online tutorials. Watching expert videos and practicing with available tabs, I learned a few songs and techniques. However, my illusions of being a proficient player were soon shattered in my first real lesson.

When I attended my first proper banjo lesson, I quickly realized that playing alone and getting guidance in person were worlds apart. Despite my online practice and confidence in public speaking, my nerves got the better of me. Trying to impress my teacher, I stumbled over chords as soon as his eyes met mine. It was surprising to feel so anxious, especially with just the two of us in the room.
My teacher, a master banjo player, was understanding and supportive. He introduced me to several exercises to practice for future lessons. Watching him play was inspiring, showcasing skills far beyond my own. I can only hope to improve before our next session, aiming to play more confidently.
One challenge I face is freezing up during lessons, preventing me from receiving valuable feedback. To overcome this, I plan to record my practice sessions and share them with my instructor. This way, I can still get his constructive criticism without my nerves undermining my performance.
By doing this, I hope to enhance my playing skills and move closer to the sound I aspire to achieve.
