Virtual reality (VR) and a computerized model of reality (simulation) are often confused. Virtual reality is a self-contained universe with its own rules and can resemble the real world or differ entirely. It can be interactive or isolated. In contrast, a simulation must closely mirror the real world, adhering to its rules and logic. For instance, a flight simulator is useless without planes or if it ignores physical laws.
The confusion arises because both VR and simulations are computer-driven. Computers act as versatile universes, integrating hardware, data, and software to create their own realities. This versatility raises questions, especially in the realm of artificial intelligence (AI): What if a computer decides not to align its virtual reality with the world of its creators? What if it imposes its own reality upon us?
In the visually stunning film "The Matrix," a breed of AI computers takes dominance over the world, using human embryos as energy sources. These embryos are kept alive in cocoons, their bodies generating electricity to fuel the machines. Human consciousness is trapped in a simulated world, crafted by the program known as "The Matrix," which creates an illusion so detailed that it appears real.
A group of rebels discovers the truth about the Matrix and fights against it, living aboard a ship in contact with a hidden city called Zion?"humanity's last sanctuary. A pivotal character, Cypher, grapples with the dilemma of whether it's better to live contently within a meticulously crafted illusion or endure a harsh reality outside of it.
The Matrix seamlessly connects human minds, creating shared experiences of sights, sounds, and emotions. It presents the illusion of choice and free will. The question arises: Is there a difference between making choices and feeling as though we do? Inside the Matrix, these experiences are indistinguishable. Decision-making appears authentic whether it's dictated by humans or the Matrix itself.
If the Matrix were infinitely complex, no observer could certainly determine whether a decision was made by humans or the Matrix. For those living within it, life feels as real as ours. Inside this complex system, free will and determinism become indistinguishable.
Yet, we instinctively feel that the Matrix and our world are different. Morpheus, the rebel leader, tells Neo that while the Matrix portrays the year as 1999, it's truly 2199. Here, the divergence between the Matrix and reality is evident. The passage of time and objective reality separate them.
In the Matrix, people perceive time through computer-generated sensations. While their bodies age and decay naturally, their mental awareness of time is artificial. Unlike reality where human actions effect change, nothing real happens in the Matrix. Interaction, or the lack thereof, defines the difference between reality and the Matrix.
True reality requires a two-way interaction. Reality influences human minds, and humans, in turn, affect reality. The Matrix creates a sensation of time, but people are unaware of its existence or lack the ability to change it. However, the rebels' actions do affect the Matrix, granting them a form of reality because they interact and alter it.
By these standards, "virtual" reality is a form of reality, albeit currently deterministic. Our actions influence it, and it affects our perceptions in return. This engagement defines reality. As virtual reality technology progresses, the line between "real" and "virtual" will blur. While the Matrix is feasible, feasibility doesn't make it real.

In "The Matrix Reloaded," Neo encounters the architect of the Matrix, resembling a divine figure. The architect reveals that Neo is the sixth reincarnation of The One and mentions previous destructions of Zion.
