Movie Review: In a Dark Place
Summary
Anna, an art teacher struggling in the city, accepts a job to educate a young girl named Flora. However, she seems to be more of a nanny than a teacher, and the film's confusion makes it hard to grasp the plot?"too tedious to unravel fully and not compelling enough to go back for answers.
Review
When I picked up "In a Dark Place," the eerie cover promised a chilling horror centered around children?"a formula that often delivers spine-tingling moments. Unfortunately, the film didn't live up to its promise and quickly turned into a perplexing disappointment.
The story begins with Anna, who senses something off about Flora, her young charge. Yet, the movie doesn’t provide any solid evidence of Flora’s supposed disturbance. Just because she deems finger painting a bit unrefined doesn't make her troubled.
The plot thickens when Anna receives news of Flora’s brother, Miles, who’s expelled from his school. The reasons are never disclosed, leaving viewers puzzled and hoping for explanations that never arrive.
As the siblings reunite, the film hints that Miles might be the sinister force. His behavior oscillates between charming and menacing, but the ambiguity leaves you scratching your head.
Amidst this confusion, Anna begins to experience disturbing visions of ghosts in the house. Just as the movie seems to edge toward intrigue, a sudden and unexplained romantic encounter between Anna and a mysterious woman derails the narrative.
Is Miles the evil one? Are the children sinister? Is Anna losing her grasp on reality? Unfortunately, as Anna spirals further into chaos, the storyline becomes increasingly incoherent, leaving viewers with more questions than answers.
