Tim Burton has transformed Sondheim’s masterpiece into a truly gripping film. Despite initial previews focusing only on Johnny Depp's recitative as he roams the streets of London, the movie offers a rich musical experience with over a dozen elaborate numbers and minimal dialogue.
Johnny Depp shines as the vengeful former Benjamin Barker, now Sweeney Todd. While his voice may not have the stage's ideal power, it suits the screen well, embodying Todd's deep-seated rage and thirst for vengeance. Similarly, Helena Bonham Carter’s portrayal of the sinister Mrs. Lovett may sometimes veer into a screech, but it fits her character?"a baker who turns victims into meat pies.
Beyond their vocals, Depp and Carter deliver nuanced performances. Depp commands attention with his intense focus, making you almost root for Todd's murderous spree despite his despicable nature. Carter's Mrs. Lovett is equally compelling and twisted?"you can't help but enjoy her dark deeds.
Burton stages the film’s violence with flair. "Geysers of blood" is an appropriate description as Depp’s Todd slashes through his victims with gusto, followed by dramatic falls into the basement with bone-crunching finishes. It’s an over-the-top spectacle that’s both horrific and oddly amusing.
The film as a whole is a testament to Burton’s artistic prowess, perfectly marrying horror and dark comedy. The lavish design, a staple of Burton's work, is breathtaking. Alan Rickman and Timothy Spall deliver exceptional performances, though the love story between Johanna and Anthony feels somewhat underwhelming.
Despite this minor flaw, Sweeney Todd stands alongside Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands as one of Burton’s finest achievements. It might even be regarded as his best work in time.
