Article:

The whole country is buzzing about "Brokeback Mountain," stirring up significant conversation. Charles Osgood noted on a Sunday morning TV editorial that Hollywood isn’t pushing a liberal agenda; they're focused on profit. Whether or not intended, capturing adults' minds or influencing youth becomes a side effect on their bank-bound journey.

For over three decades, I've cautioned that films carry underlying philosophies, intended or not, that influence us. Beyond the obvious sex, violence, and profanity, subtler philosophies exist. Now, these messages are becoming more blatant. The quest for box office success fuels this unrestrained expression in the film industry.

Mentioning any form of control, including self-control, is often countered with cries of First Amendment violations. Hollywood hasn't always distinguished between freedom and excess.

A recent poll found only one in a thousand Americans knows all constitutional rights. Most can only name one, yet the same people can identify multiple characters from "The Simpsons." This suggests filmmakers know their rights, but the general public remains unaware or indifferent.

Some believe TV and movies don't shape society. However, another poll revealed that major countries dislike Americans largely because of the film industry. Their view of America, shaped by movies, includes immorality, frivolous romance, rebellion, crime, and chaos. Nations striving for stability naturally reject such portrayals.

Can we get Hollywood’s attention? Perhaps we could speak up as they make their bank deposits. It's estimated Americans spend fifteen years of their lives watching TV and movies. Expecting the average viewer to confront Hollywood on the way to the bank might be unrealistic, but perhaps they could voice concerns during commercials that consume five of those fifteen years.

Actors earn enormous sums to say and do things many Americans oppose. Are films reflecting life, or shaping it? When offered sizeable rewards to misbehave on screen, actors may feel justified. They laugh along their bank-bound journey. Although most Americans don't mimic actors, Hollywood can portray them any way it desires.

For some, Hollywood's life suggestions don't resonate with reality. The Bible, though, has a lot to say about the darker sides of human behavior. As Proverbs 14:12 puts it, "There is a way which seems right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death."
