Yesterday, on a whim, I picked up a coloring book from Wal-Mart. It had been years since I last colored, but the urge struck me unexpectedly. Alongside it, I grabbed a 24-pack of Crayola crayons. Fortunately, they're non-toxic?"though I do wonder about the appeal and price of any toxic alternatives. Perhaps some people would enjoy crayons that add a radioactive glow to their artwork.
I chose a "Justice League to the Rescue" coloring book, featuring iconic heroes like Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, and The Flash. Batman has always been my favorite. His brooding nature sets him apart from other, more cheerful superheroes?"even in the face of chaos. If there were an award for "Crimefighter Most Likely to Visit a Therapist," Batman would certainly win. I suspect he stashes a few anti-depressants in his utility belt.
Naturally, I began my coloring journey with Batman. I gave him a blue suit, red gloves and boots, and an indigo cape. It's funny how the crayon’s label repeats "Indigo" in English, Spanish, and French. As a kid, I was baffled by this multilingual approach and often mispronounced colors in Spanish, which I conveniently blame for academic struggles. In middle and high school, I staunchly refused to carry multiple books home, fearing they'd mark me as a "loser nerd." Instead, I opted for one book at a time.
For Batman’s eyes and face, I chose a yellow-green shade. I aimed for a "money green" aura, befitting a billionaire like Bruce Wayne. Regrettably, it turned out more "ready-to-puke," which is probably accurate given how often Batman leaps from tall buildings.
Proud of my masterpiece, I signed and dated it. Who knows? If I become famous, this piece might fetch a small fortune on eBay. Don’t worry if it's out of your budget?"I have more pages to color. Just for you, I’ll even switch to those old-school toxic crayons for that special glow. Imagine owning a Timothy Ward original with a unique radioactive touch.
