Thought for the Day: Why Doing a Task Twice Might Beat Planning Once
Summary:
Is cutting a piece of wood twice better than measuring and cutting it once? It seems that way, or why else would I keep doing it?Article:
Yesterday, I found myself repairing the eaves on my house. They’d suffered some water damage, and I needed to add a supportive two-by-four.
I had already cut a thinner piece but realized a sturdier, longer piece would fit better. I briefly considered measuring the spot first, but that would’ve meant finding my tape measure and climbing up a tricky ladder. What a hassle!
Instead, I laid the thinner piece against the two-by-four, estimated extra length for a snug fit, and got to work with my handsaw. A couple of minutes later, my custom support was ready.
As you might guess, the fit was indeed snug ?" actually, too snug by about half an inch.
Have you ever tried trimming half an inch off a two-by-four with a handsaw? It’s tricky; the wood chips away, making it hard to saw smoothly. Ultimately, it took about 17 times longer than the original cut.
But surely, doing it twice is better. Otherwise, why would I keep doing it?
Interestingly, as I’ve grown older, I’ve noticed myself opting for the "plan first" method more often. So perhaps the “do it twice” approach proves that you’re still young ?" and maybe a bit foolish.
Here's something I’ve realized about old folks:
- They take their time because they can.
- They plan ahead and do tasks just once.
It might take them 30 minutes to finish something that I rush through in six minutes. However, given that I often end up doing it 12 times, I spend 72 minutes on tasks that take seniors only 30.
The remaining 42 minutes give them time to walk leisurely, savor their meals, and take naps.
I used to think naps were a necessity for older people. Now, I see they’re a luxury for the wise.
Even with this newfound wisdom, I’m pretty sure my future holds countless rounds of the “do it twice” game.
Well, time to skip some more measurements.
