The Illogical Puppet of Iran: Can We Rewrite His Script?
First, we learned to pronounce and spell his name: Ahmadinejad. Not exactly easy like "Smith." We watched him perform on the knee of a clever mullah, showing patience as a fair-minded audience would. But the more we listened, the more it became clear that the puppet was following a script that made no sense.
Ahmadinejad raises a hand, and like a skilled ventriloquist, the mullah doesn’t move his lips while the little puppet threatens to wipe Israel off the map. He blusters against any audience member who disagrees with his absurd goals. Then, he raises the other hand and claims the right to nuclear technology?"only for peaceful purposes, of course.
The audience is losing patience with this dangerous, nonsensical show. Some are so alarmed that they’re demanding a new script. A few have even suggested tearing down the puppet’s stage.
Poor Ahmadinejad. It’s tragic that this happens just because he hasn’t been given a good script.
All he can do in response to the audience's threats are weak taunts about his nation’s name, like "I ran? You ran? Who ran?"
We must look to the turbaned puppeteers who wrote the script. They allow this illogical performance because they believe their theocracy depends on painting the West as the enemy, hoping to keep their people away from revolutionary ideas?"like enlightenment, freedom, democracy, and a vibrant social life where men and women can mix freely. Ahmadinejad, with his provocative bravado, serves them well.
Their urgency is understandable. They’re living in a world, especially in the West, that has largely emerged from the Dark Ages. Their control relies on preserving a medieval mindset. Meanwhile, modernity continually crashes in through the Internet, Hollywood, and the free world.
The puppeteers might actually believe Ahmadinejad is doing fine with an illogical script. Are they worried about explosive consequences? Yes, but their belief in a paradise afterlife if their nation self-destructs might dominate their thoughts.
With distance as their security, what’s the chance they’ll create a new script or pause performances? Given their anxiety, expectations should be low.
Thus, we look to the Iranian people. After decades of darkness and their pride being entwined with the puppet’s bravado, is there hope they'll demand a new script or close the show?
Are we telling ourselves a fairytale by hoping someone will take over before the puppet provokes the audience to bring the house down?
If history is any indication, perhaps we are. And that would be a tragic outcome for us, Iranians in general, and even for the ill-fated puppet and his paranoid puppeteers.
