The Finer Points of Poverty
Summary
I'm poor, and I'm not ashamed. In fact, I'm somewhat proud of it. Being poor is an experience that many will never understand. Some people will spend their entire lives without encountering the unique aspects of poverty.Embracing Poverty
I've embraced my financial situation. Although I wasn’t always poor, arriving here was quite an achievement. It required quitting jobs without a backup plan, spending most of my paycheck at the bar, maxing out credit cards, and living in a small town where earning $6 an hour is considered good money.
One day, reality hit when I discovered I couldn’t pay my car note with just 11 cents in my bank account. I had finally dipped below the poverty line, joining the ranks of the homeless and those on welfare. To celebrate my newfound status, I enjoyed a mayonnaise sandwich.
The Perks of Being Poor
Being poor comes with its own set of privileges:
- Lightweight Payments: Instead of a wallet full of cash, I pay for essentials like food and gas with spare change found around the house.
- Unique Shopping Experiences: I frequent stores with creatively misspelled names like Sav-A-Lot and DisKount King, offering products Wal-Mart shoppers can only dream of.
- Televised Treats: Restaurant commercials are now tantalizing dreams, affordable only if a wealthy relative leaves me an inheritance.
- Fashion Forward: I sport hand-me-downs, often mismatched, and endure shoes three sizes too small.
- Official Sports: Begging and borrowing are the official sports of the National Poor People’s Association.
- Romantic Realism: If Ms. Right comes along, I can’t afford to date her anyway.
A Wealth of Experience
For those of you with stable jobs, comfortable homes, and overflowing wardrobes, my condition might seem enviable. If my story has upset your sense of self-worth, I apologize. I didn’t choose poverty; it just happened. Perhaps one day you’ll find yourself on the same path. Until then, feel free to ask me about life in poverty. I’ll be the person with the “Will Work For Food” sign. Pull up in your Mercedes, and I promise, I won’t laugh.
