Why Do We Always Seem to Get Sick During Holidays or Events?
Have you ever noticed that whenever there's a holiday, vacation, or special event, someone ends up sick? It's almost as if it's planned that way. As I sat reminiscing today, I realized that every family gathering I've attended has featured at least one member with the sniffles.
Take Christmas when I was seven, for example. I was dealing with appendicitis. Was it just bad luck, or is there some force delighting in mixing joy with discomfort? If so, we should let it know we're far from impressed.
Timing is indeed everything. There comes a moment in everyone’s life when things seem to go wrong, and all you can do is watch. Perhaps this is necessary; if nothing went wrong, we wouldn't know when things are right. We could try turning those tears of helplessness into tears of joy. Imagine saying, "I love it when I get scarlet fever." Oops.
Here's a memorable one: Evil chose to be particularly cruel on Thanksgiving. First, the list: I had chicken pox, my youngest sister did too, my other sister had scarlet fever, and my parents were both down with the flu. Thanksgiving, of all holidays. Usually, we express gratitude around the table. What a challenge that year. I ended up thankful for oatmeal baths!
It's fascinating how life tests us in ironic ways. The outcome of our battles with nature may show the kind of person we could become, but it’s during the battle that we truly uncover who we are.
