Robin's Rainbow
Summary
When my daughter was six, she asked, "Mom, if I pray for a rainbow, will God make one?" I stumbled for a moment but assured her that if she believed, it could happen. But later, I worried: what if there's no rainbow tomorrow?
Article
One night, as my young daughter was saying her prayers, she paused and asked, "Mom, if I pray for a rainbow, will God make one?" I hesitated briefly. Anyone who can part the Red Sea can surely create a rainbow for a child. I told her, "Yes, if you believe..." Then I thought, "What have I promised? What if there's not a cloud in the sky tomorrow?" I'd risked shaking her faith.
The next day was cloudless, of course. It was Memorial Day, and as we visited the cemetery, I hoped she'd forgotten about the rainbow. But I hadn't. The Bible teaches that if you believe, God answers your prayers. As we walked, I worried. Then, we saw a section of the cemetery being watered with sprinklers, and there it was?"her rainbow, as clear as day. It felt like a gentle reminder from God: "See? I can make it happen."
However, I didn’t recognize it for what it was until later?"I missed the chance to show her that her prayer had been answered. Her simple prayer became a profound lesson for me. It made me realize how often I overlook answered prayers, no matter how they manifest.
I suppose I could forgive her for the oatmeal mess behind the fridge, telling the neighbor she had a "mold" on her face, correcting me bluntly in conversation, or decorating the hall with stick-on feminine napkins. Ah, I miss those days.
